Day 1: Ob-la-di Ob-la-da

The Beatles

“Ob la di, ob-la-da, life goes on..”

This is such a quintessential song belonging to the Beatles era perpetrating the story of two people falling in love and leading a perfectly non-exciting life on a daily basis, that it restores your faith in the humanity. What seems so simplified encompasses the everyday qualms of normal daily life, including the mundane aspects, which I think is what needs to be celebrated. Here’s what it does to me:

You think you know me so well,
I am here for you, while you are down in a well
Come out of your shell,
That’s the only thing I can tell.

Make it quick, I am running out of patience,
Don’t play with my emotions,
You and the kids have no conscience,
Love can be such a beautiful nuisance
.

The Park is filled with carousels,
The kids and you love chocolate pretzels,
I want to climb out of the barrel and play kiss-and-tell,
The shell only bothers me, ever so little.

Day 3: Wake me up before you go-go..

Wham!

A tree stood tall,
Amidst a beautiful fall,
More majestic than a mall,
It always protected all.

A bird with magical blood lived in the tree,
From the time when time was free,
The tree was key,
For the bird to be.

A day when the sun was up high,
The bird felt the tree sigh,
The tree had woken up,
The bird looked up.

There was something different that day,
The tree had not yet given it away,
That it was its last day,
But the bird had just started its day.

The bird heard a thud,
It’s nest filled with mud,
In one fell swoop, it’s life blood,
The ancient tree, was dead.

Day 2: Your Love

The Outfield

“I just want to use your love.. tonight..”

This one completely talks about the millennial generation, focusing on one night of epic fun, only to forget all about it the next day. The whole fad of living-in-the-moment, while beautiful, has certainly been stretched thin by this generation. There’s beauty in consistency, but there’s also a certain beauty in spontaneity. And The Outfield captured this, rather beautifully, years ago. Here’s what the lyrics mean to me:

You swipe right, you swipe left,
You make a bet,
Your night is set.

Holy Shit!
Two hours into the date, you feel it,
This is it!

Four hours in,
Reality sets in,
Tonight is the only win!

It’s two a.m.
He’s on the gram,
You peek from the washroom.

The deed is done,
Love has been over-run,
Tomorrow it’s someone else’s turn.

Imagine.

“Imagine all the people, living life in peace” – John Lennon

Music is art, music is mystery, music is a healer, music is love, music is oxygen.

A tune represents a thousand words, way beyond what the lyrics really say. My blog will focus on snippets/poems inspired by these songs! Give them a read, and if you relate to it, let me know what you think!
